The reference point is Buddha's birth 543 years before Jesus Christ.

One thing I am not sure about though...Does the Buddhist year also start and finish the same as the Christian one
Because they appear to use the same months. |

April 13th is the first day of the Buddhist year, but for internetional reasons, the Thai Calander changes early on Jan 1st alongw with the Gregorian Calander.
Thais still celebrate both new years, but Song Kran is now only symbollic to the calender. |

Many cultures, religions and nations have there own calendar. Muslims count from the year of Mohammed. The Jewish calendar is different too. Thailand and China both have totally different New Years.
I like the Thai style - the celebrate everyone's New Year.
We are sometimes a bit forgetful in the west about where our roots are. Our calendar was implemented by Pope Gregory to normalise the Christain world at that time for Saints days and religeous festivals. There was an adjustment made in the 1700's (days added/lost) to account for (I believe) Leap years.
Thailand is different in that they adopted the Gregorian months and days but NOT the year. So as Pat says we are in 2550 which makes me feel very old. So this year make sure a lady has 2532 or less on her ID!
Most nations have officially adopted the Gregorian calendar and GMT for global consistency.
As a piece of Trivia:
In Napoleonic times, in France, there was a move to "decimalise" time. A day would be in 10 units, there were to be 10 periods per year (about 36 days each) etc etc. I think there is a clock somewhere like Versailles showing this possible change.
It always amuses me when Europeans scoff and say how England had to go decimal - I always agree with them and then say "so everything is decimal?" They reply positively until I point at the clock - 1/12 ths, Calendar 1/12 ths etc.
The reason for 12 was based on a Syrian numbering system. You can count to 12 on one hand by counting the nodes on each of your 4 fingers.
12 was a better base number for dividing goods/grain.12 can be divided by 12, 6, 4, 3, 2, 1 - 10 can only be divided by 10, 5, 2, 1. The sub-divisions of 12 can also be divided again - the sub-divisions of 10 cannot. |

That's probably a tricky grey area you don't wanna get caught up in.
It's similar here in Canada. The age of consent currently (although our current government is looking at raising it) is 14. For anal sex it's 18. For any sort of pornography, it's 18, unless the producer is under 18 and it's for personal use only (eg, if you're 17, and you make a video of yourself having sex with your 17 year old girlfriend, that's fine, as long as only the two of you are watching it; but if you email a clip to a friend, then you can be charged with distribution of child pornography). And even if you comply with all of that, there's still a possibility of breaking the by having consensual sex with the person, especially if you talk to them first on the internet, or if you are perceived as being in any sort of position of authority over them.
For me, even though it's possible to go younger, it's really not worth the trouble or the risk. So, even though I'm pretty easy going, don't like to discriminate based on age, it's strictly 18+ for me unless she's really special like potential soul-mate material, plus her parents like me and are ok with us having sex, and we have no other relationship than the romantic one. And even then I'd be hesitant.
Meeting a sex trade worker on the street for a shag and counting on a convoluted circumstantial legal loophole, especially in a country with serious legal consequences for a violation of this nature, is somewhere you totally don't wanna go; shaky ground indeed. |

Any farang caught sleeping with a Thai national in thailand who is under the age of 18 would find it very difficult to convince the judge there was no financial transaction, even with parental consent.
It's not worth thinking about. With the amount of quality LBs and GGs on offer, there's no need to take silly risks. Most 18-20 year olds in Thailand look underage if that's your thing. |

coxy, strange rule - but everyone has their tolerance levels
Myself - i wont tell the wife ANYTHING.
Its on a "need to know" basis.
No point courting disaster letting her know i'm having fun on the side.
Don't you know that being a husband means having no fun !>! |
