If you have enought time, it's really worth taking a few days to go to Chang Mai and then have a couple of day trips or treks around there, or head to Koh Tao/Samui, Krabi, or Phi Phi.

I've never ventured up north before, but would love to check out something other than constant pavement and traffic of BKK.
So, what is the recommended way to travel to Chiang Mai... by air? If there is train service, is that more scenic?
As for the LB scene, are there any LB clubs in the Chiang Mai neighborhood? If their pickings are slim to none, perhaps it's best to bring a companion from BKK. But then the chance to meet someone new who's a Chiang Mai local might offer up a better opportunity of snagging a lovely tour guide.
Any opinions/suggestions/experiences welcomed and appreciated.

The overnight train is really good value and gives a good view of the countryside in some places .
I have heard of LB's up there but did'nt see any myself . I think there is a thread about it somewhere. |

The train to Chaing Mai takes as long as the bus, but it's cheap and the overnight train has sbunks.
I'd definietly fly if you have the budget.
I've never been hunting in Chaing Mai but thee are a few nice LBs about, plus a few GG bars. I think KK has previsouly posted some info about LBs in CHaing Mai with a few pics and recommended bars. |

Have posted some information about Chiang Mai previously, however if requested will find the relevant posts and enhance.
In summary, the scene comprises one LB Beer Bar called Marina Bar, which is certainly fun, but short on stunners.
The Simon Cabaret is one of the best options to score with an attractive LB. Buy a ticket for the latest show of the evening, and you will get the opportunity to meet the performers after showtime and make arrangements.
There are quite a few streetwalkers about along Loi Kroh Rd, as you head towards the moat/old city from Marina Bar.
The disco (Bubbles) at Pornping Hotel is worth checking out.
Otherwise, you may strike it lucky in one of the beer bars, but its a long way from being anything like the Pattaya scene.
If you try using the search engine with the terms Marina Bar, Simon Cabaret & Chiang Mai, you should be able to uncover some of the relevant posts.
Cheers

s far as getting there, I would definitely recommend flying. The first time we went from BKK we took the overnight train, never done that sort of thing before, thought it would be good. I thought I could sleep anywhere, but relegated to the top bunk (about half the width of the bottom bunk) I had a crap night's sleep the train broke down so the journey was about 14 hours.
So, been there done that. These days with the budget airlines it really doesn't stretch the budget. The wife is actually in Chiang Mai now, I think, the fare was about 1400bht one way and 1500bht back to BKK, one hour flight. |

I guess I'm wrong about the train as I can't remember how much it cost , I had an upper bunk too but as I'm slim I did'nt mind it too much as it was a bit of an adventure . I guess next time I'd fly as I've not tried that option but at least it was better than an overnight bus ride.
I seem to remember the breakfast was pretty ordinary and we ran out of water to wash in the morning. But I like trains |

I had the same same experience on my lats trip to Chaing Mai, had a top bunk which wasn't very comfortable and too narrow, couldn't sleep and spent the night listening to a group of loud drunk Chinese guys playing cards. Flew back in luxury for less than 1500bht |

Why anyone would bother with a bus or train to Chiang Mai I'll never understand.
Check out the prices being offered by the various discount operators with numerous flights daily.
Aside from Thai Airways, you have Nok Air, Air Asia, One 2 Go....
If I wanted a 'scenic root', I'd look out the hotel window while getting laid.
Cheers

Many thanks to everybody who kindly offered their advice and sharing of experiences.
As Phil Lander mentioned, I, too, like trains. But I also like planes... especially flight attendants! With the inexpensive airfares going on, it appears that it wouldn't be a strain on the budget for me, and perhaps a companion, to venture up north.
I appreciate your summary of the LB environment, KK. I'll follow your advice and search the forum for more details. Who knows, there might be a diamond in the rough. And I like your definition of 'scenic root'!
By the way, I've only been a member of this forum for a ST, but I'm really impressed with everyone's pleasant attitude and willingness to answer questions so quickly, ones you've maybe heard a 100 times. When my touchdown in LOS gets near, I'll likely post to the Classified if some of you want to meet up. Thanks!

Mr K I've always assumed that is you an your avatar, if so sleep would have been impossible in the top bunk. I think were all in agreement here...fly to Chiang Mai, then off to the hotel for a scenic root |

Well we went to the train station to just see how much it would cost and then the wife asked for the money to pay for the train They (wife and her sister) always discussed things in Thai and then told me what we were doing . She seemed to lose the use of her English skills after a few hours in Thailand. We had intended to fly but they always went with the cheaper option even though I was paying. Same same with the buses , hope next time my companion will be a bit more informative.
I had only been to Pattaya before about 14 years ago so everything was new and strange to me that trip . so hope my later trips will be a bit more comfortable.
I did manage a root , but it was'nt very scenic as the short time hotel was a real dump , and she had a very pretty face but the damage done to her body after a couple of kids was'nt very pretty. |
