With a taxi fare of 350 Baht (£5.50) to my hotel in Bangkok. I can not be arsed to piss around on the sky train following a long haul flight. |

I'm with you on that one pentire, my thoughts exactly.
However, useful for those who like their teerak to see them off from the airport, she can get back to work in Nana more easily.
p.s.

Skytrain and subway are both great ways to get around especially during rush hour times. Incredibly easy to use - get a card if you're going to be in BKK for more than a day or so. It's all explained in English - no muss no fuss. Nana to Patpong and everywhere in between; it's easy.
From the airport? Gonna be awhile. Was just there a couple of days ago and it's not at all close to being ready. Would I take the skytrain from the airport after 20+ hours traveling?? You gotta be kidding. With the price of a taxi at $8 or less (including highway tolls) to any BKK location, for me it's well worth the price.
Maybe after a short hop to Cambo or Phuket, it might make sense. |

It must be my sense of adventure, but i'd take it from the airport in a flash.
I've never been able to get a taxi for below the AOT (Airports of Thailand) set fare of 400 plus tolls, so the saving in money by using the new sky train link will go towards my first ladyboy of the trip.
That, or towards an Air Asia plane ticket to Phuket and the wonderful C&D's bar...... |

The metered taxi's from the airport don't work on a minimum 400bht basis, just a 50bht airport surcharge and you pay the tolls, at quiet times you can get in to Sukumvit for 2000-250bht.
If you are not lugging big cases the sky train might be an option, I'm not sure where it is finally going to intersect with the Suk line, probably somewhere up around Siam Square, wherever, it will certainly involve a change of train to get down to the Nana area |

But everytime I go to the little public taxi desk, they give me a ticket, and say 400 plus tolls set price. And the meter doesnt go on in the cab neither. I thought this was the norm, as laid out by the airport, bit like when you arrive into JFK heading towards Manhatten?
Am I being done over here then? Will most defiately be using the Sky train then! My bad weighed just 9 kilos for a 3 week trip last time, so no worries lugging it around! |

I must admit that saving 150 odd Baht is not on my mind when I arrive at Bangkok Airport and I just do the same as Fatboy which is pay the desk and then jump in a taxi. If the taxi driver asks me for toll money then I do not tip him, if not then he gets another 100 Baht at journeys end.
A cheaper alternative is to catch a meter cab outside departures which has just dropped off passengers on the upper level. |

The airport public taxi desk is supposed to be meter + 50 Baht Airport charge + tollway charges (if you ask the driver to use the tollway).
Depending on who is sitting at the desk they will try the 400 Baht flat rate scam. If you take a close look at your "ticket" it should state what I wrote at the top of my post.
There is now something in the works to increase the taxi fares reported in both Bangkok Post and The Nation so expect around 10-15% increase in taxi fares. |

Come on, you are in Bangkok and not in Congo.
The skytrain was build by a german company (Siemens), so of course its safe. |
