Can someone suggest where I might find some Acidophilus here in Bangkok? In the USA its usually only found in Walgreens in the vitamin aisle. The aisle with 20,000 types of vitamins. I dont expect to find it in a 711 here in BKK.
I almost always get intestinal problems when I travel out here and i forgot my Acidophilus this time. I havent eaten anything yet so any tips will be helpful! |

You check out any pharmacy in Bangkok's shopping centers like Boot's or Watsons. The pharmacies in Bangkok can sell you prescription drugs like antibiotics WITHOUT any prescription. There are a couple of big pharmacies along Sukhumwhit you can check out if you happen to be staying along that road.
They may not have the exact brand that you want but can offer a generic brand instead. Maybe you want to try Immodium? |

You might find it at a health food store, or perhaps some of the bigger chain pharmacies (Boots, Watsons, Siam Drugs) - however, I don't recall seeing it before.
You could try using the yogurt drinks or eating yogurt for a similar effect, which you can buy at 7/11. |

Try strong black tea and burned toast - they adsorb (_d_ is not a spelling error) the exotoxins that cause the gross diarrhoea.
Imodium is strictly a short-time temporary remedy, it still causes you to retain all the contaminated food products in your intestine and rectum, instead of letting them flow out of you.
And a lot of the time, it is not bacterial, but is a protozoal infection - giardia, so antibiotics are useless. Foul-smelling smaller solid stools, watery discharges are rather characteristic of it. In which case, medicines like Fasigyn - tinidazole - are required. 4 x 500 mg tablets and in 24 hours you are right as rain. |

I use Imodium at one time or another on almost every trip to Thailand.
If you need or want a pro-biotic, then Yakult is available at all 7/11's, Family Mart's and Foodland (Sukhumvit soi 5) and other places, very cheap too. |

Better change your cook or restaurant!
Never used it at all, and only took Fasigyn twice in all my trips there.
Had more gut infections from poorly prepared food in Japan, supposedly a clean country, than anywhere else.... |

Thanks Dix, good input. Is "yakult" a pro-biotic in the same sense as live cultures found in Yogurt and Acidophilus? Never heard of it before. So far I am doing well. I had some concerns because my trip to Manila and Angeles City resulted in some very annoying ongoing issues. It kind of ruins the fun of being "horny" if you've that going on down there too. Probiotics are a godsend, for sure. Ill do some research on Yakult. I tried buying yogurt at 711 but all the labels are not in english so looking for the all-important "Live Cultures" stamp on it, like you're supposed to do, was fruitless. |

| Unfortunately I went to 4 different 7-11's and none of them had Yakult. They looked at me like I was a crazy american. |

I've purchased Yakult at 7/11's so I know it's there, plus Foodland or other similar outlet. Why you cannot find it I don't know, I didn't have a problem getting it if I wanted it.
Yakult is similar to Actimel etc, i.e. a pro-biotic. |
