One more question for the seasoned travellers to LOS....
I was there last year for Loi Krathong festivial which was cool..and not too much of a distraction.
this year, the last night of my trip will fall on the Kings Birthday. I know this is a huge celebration in thailand. Is this a day to catch, miss, or doesn't it matter? I'd hate for my last night in LOS to be a dud. Wasn't sure if this is one of those holiday's where everything is shut down, or if it would be fun time for someone who hasn't been there for it before. I'll be in Phuket at that time.
thanks

You just never know what is going to happen Hoot and sometimes the decision taken is a regional one. I remember a couple of years ago when it was announced that His Majesty's birthday was indeed going to be a ''dry'' day. The King intervened and said that was unnecessary.
Maybe that precedent has now been set however, I don't know |

Thanks PT.. I don't plan for what happens once I hit the ground, but i do like to know about things like this, forewarned is forearmed.
If it does turn out to be a dry night, at least I can now plan ahead to stock up on booze and LB's and open up 'Club Hoot' in my hotel room for the evening. |

In BKK, I'd assume it'll be a dry day unless you hear otherwise! Best to plan ahead. You'll know for sure a couple of days in advance. That said, most dry days when the bars are closed you can get beers in the hotels and many restaurants. But if you know in advance, you'll have your little duckies in a row and ready to report for duty!
Election days this past year were hit and miss. Some bars opened then quickly closed and most hotels and restaurants were dry.... Like Pentire said, nothing is for sure, after all, This Is Thailand! |

| The last 2 years have been dry in Phuket, although you can still get a drink in hotels and restaurants. Best do as AD says, and get your duckies lined up for an in-room party! |

If I remember the years correctly in 2006 many of the bars in Pattaya were open after what Pentire previously mentioned. Then last year it was back to mostly dry again. If I was a betting man I would bet on dry given the current ruling party. But in Thailand I wouldn't bet the ruling party will still be in power in six months. |
